Using the Alphabet Index

Click on any letter in the A-Z strip to jump directly to words or roots beginning with that letter. Letters shown in lighter text indicate no entries exist for that letter.

Listening to Pronunciations

Each entry includes a timeline of historical pronunciations. Click the "LISTEN" button next to any time period to hear the reconstructed pronunciation.

Note: Audio recordings may not be available for all entries or time periods.

Understanding IPA

The phonetic transcriptions use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Some common symbols:

[e] - as in French "été"

[ɛ] - as in French "père"

[ə] - schwa, as in French "le"

[ɑ̃] - nasal a, as in French "an"

[ʁ] - French uvular r

  • Definitions in English or French
